Signing Andy Dalton heats up QB battle in Dallas

The Dallas Cowboys have quite a QB battle brewing, Prescott, 26 is coming off one of his best statistical season performances and is poised to do even better next season. Prescott has the fourth best odds to win the coveted Most Valuable Player award behind Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson according to FoxBet.com,.

This season Prescott played in all 16 games and threw for nearly 5,000 yards, 30 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and completed 388 passes out of 596 passing attempts with a 65% completion rate. In his career Prescott has never missed a game in the NFL playing all 64 games in his career.

The Cowboys signed former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton in early May to backup Prescott. Dalton is a hometown kid from Katy, Texas who played quarterback at Texas Christian University and was drafted by the Bengals in 2011.

In his first year with the Bengals Dalton threw for more than 3,300 yards, 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

In 2019, Dalton, 32 is coming off a lackluster season and performance,he played 13 games and struggled with injury and passed for nearly 3500 yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. In his career he has played in more professional games (133) than any other QBs drafted around him and has thrown for 31,594 yards, 204 touchdowns and 118 interceptions.

During his nine-year reign in Cincinnati, Dalton led the Bengals to four consecutive playoff berths and has three Pro Bowl appearances. With Prescott continuing to hold out Dalton may be gearing up to become the starter in week one of the regular season.

Dalton was 70-61-2 as a starter for the Bengals. With Dalton added to the roster it gives the Cowboys not only peace of mind at the backup quarterback position, but also options at the position and leverage in the contract negotiations with Dak Prescott.

Normally in the month of May the Cowboys are having offseason workouts to prepare for training camp for the start of a new football season but this offseason is a bit different, not just because there is a pandemic that has upended the sports world but also because the star quarterback, Dak Prescott for the Dallas Cowboys is in an intense contract negotiation, refusing and holding out attending any offseason virtual workouts and team meetings.

The Cowboys ended the 2019 season with an 8-8 record, missing the playoffs, but Prescott is looking to cash in big on his performance.

Prescott has been in a rookie contract since he was drafted in 2016 by the Cowboys and is looking to negotiate for a bigger contract by the start of the 2020 season.

He finished number one statistically overall according to Football Outsiders.com beating out Superbowl champion Patrick Mahomes.

He is 40-24 in his career as a starter for the Cowboys and is also a two-time Pro Bowler and won the 2016 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

In his first year in the NFL as a starter for the Cowboys, he completed 311 passes out 459 passing attempts with a completion percentage of 67.76, he threw for over 3600 yards, 23 touchdowns and four interceptions.

The Cowboys were busy in the offseason drafting college standouts CeeDee Lamb, a star wide receiver from the University of Oklahoma to bolster the offense and Trevon Diggs a cornerback from the University of Alabama to help the defense.

Other draft picks include Neville Gallimore out of the University of Oklahoma, Reggie Robinson from the University of Tulsa, Tyler Biadasz from the University of Wisconsin, Bradlee Anae out of the University of Utah and Ben DiNucci from James Madison University.
